Today, as I've promised, I'll show you how to make this candle and incense stick holder. You can make it of course any color you want, choose the colors that match your room or the favorite colors of a friend, in case you make it a gift to someone. The small dish can be an incense stick holder or you can put in it earrings, keys or any other small items, as you see in the photo below.
First you have to make some newspapers tubes. You will cut a newspaper in strips as you see in the image no. 1 and after that, using a wooden barbecue skewer, you make the tubes, placing the stick in diagonal in the right down corner of the strip. You start rolling the newspaper around the stick as tight as you can and when you rich the end of the strip, you put some glue on the up left corner and roll it between your fingers to seal it. All sticks should have more or less the same size in order for your to work to look neat and pretty. Always the tubes will have a wider side and a narrow one, this will help in connecting the sticks, when we need to add more of them to obtain the needed size of the item.
In the second photo you can see how to start to build the base of the item. You flatten a paper tube with your fingers and double it in the size of 8-10 cm and keep coiling around it more tubes, until it looks like in the photo no. 3. You have to insert the narrow extremity of the tube in the wide extremity of the previous tube in order to connect them easier. If the tube goes out when you make the turn, just add a small drop of white glue on the narrow extremity of the tube before you insert it in the previous tube. As an advice, you should from beginning use the white glue diluted with a bit of water. When your base will look like in the photo you just give it a layer of white glue and let it dry. When one side has dried, you turn it and give it a layer of glue on the other side. This will make the base strong and keep its shape.
Now in order to make the small dish, you flatten a paper tube and coil it around the barbecue stick like in photo no. 4. When the paper roll has at least 1 cm diameter, you can carefully take the stick out and continue rolling catching the roll with one hand and rolling the paper tube with the other. When you have a roll more or less like the one in the photo no. 5, you give it a layer of white glue and before it sticks you start to give it its shape pushing slowly with your fingers. You let the center a bit flat, this will be the bottom of the dish, and for the sides you push the levels of newspaper to make them look like photo no. 6. As you notice, mine is asymmetrical, with one side higher then the other, you can make it the same, or with the same height all around. Your finger must push very slowly when you make the sides of the dish, otherwise the dish can just fall apart. When you reached the desired shape, you should give it a layer of white glue on both sides and let it dry to keep its shape.
To make the petals of the flower, you will use the same technique used to make the base, but your first fold should measure 2- 2,5 cm and you coil only until you finish a paper tube and close it. So each petal is made of one paper tube only. You will need around 20 or 22 petals, because the flower had two levels, as you see in the photos 7 and 8. You give each one a layer of white glue on each side and allow to dry. When all your pieces are ready and dry, you start to paint them individually with the desired colors on both sides, allow to dry as in photos no. 9 and 10. The next step is to assemble the item, using white glue. You give a layer of glue to the up side of the base and place your first level of petals and your dish as you see in photo no. 10. Don't forget to place your small candle in the middle of the petals to be sure you stick them in the right place and have enough space in the center for the candle. Stick also your dish like in photo no. 10.
Than proceed to stick the second layer of petals as in photo no. 11, one over the line where meet two petals from the first layer.
When all is assembled, you should give a good layer of white glue to the entire decoration on both sides, This will help to keep its shape and harden (photo no. 12).
When the white glue has dried, you should give a layer of varnish in spray like photo no. 13 ( this one dries in minutes) or from a jar with a brush (this will take a few good hours to dry), as you prefer, and allow to dry.
The last step is to decorate each petal with a crystal, which can be glued with white glue or with hot silicone as in photo no.14.
Now you can place your candle in the middle of the petals and the incense stick in the middle of the dish and enjoy your beautiful, colorful, original, unique decoration! This is how you can make wonderful decoration, with regular stuff we all have at home, recycling old newspapers. The candle & stick incense holder will give a touch of color and romance to your room or can be the perfect gift for the coming birthday of your mother, sister or friend.
I hope you will all try to make it and let me know how it went. You could even send me the photos of your own version !
